NCPEN Current Work and Minutes

North Carolina Parenting Educators Network Meeting October 4, 2005 (10a-2p) – Raleigh

Members present: Alma Watson, Detra Davis, Denise McCullough, Sharon Roberts, Michael Haley, Catherine Anderson, Karen DeBord, Sheila Bazemore and Karen Schrader.

Sheila Bazemore, NCPEN president, called the meeting to order. Members introduced themselves, gave information about their organization/group and gave updates on other activities of interest to parenting educators.

Think Tank Reports:

Best Practice Workgroup : Karen DeBord presented on behalf of the committee. Committee members gathered many research reports. This information was then presented in a matrix of measurement areas. The areas of measurement are:

Research-based

Intensity & Duration

Program Planning

Program Design

Multi-layered

Cultural Sensitivity

Evaluation

Parent Educator Training

Parent Involvement

Alma Watson suggested that the Committee add the Family Support Principles as an umbrella to the matrix.

Public Awareness: Workgroup: Discussion included methods of creating awareness about NCPEN as well as credential opportunities. Alma Watson, Detra and Denise agreed to work with Sheila on Sharon and bring ideas to the group at the April meeting.

Michael Haley announced he had changed positions at DJJDP. The 4Fs project is a new project for Secretary’s Sweat’s office. The 4Fs include: Family, Faith-based, Females and Fatherhood.

The Fatherhood Conference will be held June 14 – 16, 2006. The Parenting Institute Conference will be held in May 2006.

Catherine will send out credential renewal notices to those credentialed educators who were credentialed in 2002 and January – March of 2003.

Dr. Wayne Matthews, NC State, gave an entertaining and informative luncheon presentation on “Just a Spoonful of Sugar Makes the Medicine Go Down”. Pizza was provided by NCPEN.
