January 9, 2002 NCPEN Meeting Minutes, 10:00 – Center for Prevention of School Violence Karen DeBord, Chair called the meeting to order and facilitated discussion. Present: Shari Moxley (Campbell University), Sally Sloop (NCPC), Cinda Amen (The Parenting Institute), Stephanie Moore, (NCPEN newsletter), Karen DeBord (NCCES), Stephanie Jones (NCCES), Beth Caragol (NC Family Resource Coalition), Catherine Anderson (DJJDP-CPSV), Ellen Menzies (DSS-Catawba County), Susan Brown (NCDPI), Henry Helms (NCBCE), Ginger Hester (ICPFC), Susan Hanley (CCPN), Allison Simpson (CCPN), Robin Roberts (NCPAT), Sheila Bazemore (NCDPH), Melissa DeRosier (3-C ISD, Inc). Upcoming Conferences Announced Included: · Jan 28-30 National Smart Start Collaboration Conference, Greensboro, NC · Feb. NC Head Start Conference · March 4-6 DSS Families Conference · April 8-9 23rd Annual Child Abuse Prevention Conference, Greensboro, NC · June 13-14 4th Annual Men are Nurturers, Too! Fatherhood Conference, the Millennium Hotel, Durham, NC · August 22-23 NCAEYC Conference · SE NC Family Support Network – Coming Together Conference, Wilmington, NC Shari Moxley, secretary, distributed minutes from the September 5 meeting and the November 12 on-line chat. Catherine Anderson, treasurer, reported that there is $767.10 in the NCPEN checking account. Current memberships total 25 organizational and 10 individual. Karen DeBord appointed a nominating committee of Sheila Bazemore, Ginger Hester, and Shari Moxley. They will present a slate of officers to be voted on at the March meeting. Henry Helms gave an update on issues and policies of concern to NCPEN. · An excerpt from the North Carolina Commission on Raising Achievement and Closing Gaps report was distributed. Specifically discussed was Recommendation Three, “that a professionally designed public information campaign be initiated statewide to get the attention of parents and local communities.” · The Family Focused Workplace Guide is currently being updates and will be available in the spring. · Also mentioned were new federal education legislation, Title One money for parent involvement, and finding ways to tie into parent-school involvement issues. Stephanie Moore reported the next newsletter would be out at the end of the month. The deadline for the next issue is March 15, 2002. This is the last paid issue. Stephanie will also email members about their use of the newsletters and the number of newsletters organizational members actually need. It was discussed to reduce the number that is mail to organizational members to reduce our cost and better meet the needs of members. Karen DeBord reported that the Parenting Conference in November received great reviews. Approximately 175 individuals attended the conference and plans are already underway for next year. Cinda Amen discussed outreach and education. Stephanie Moore developed a NCPEN display for use at conferences. It was displayed at the Investing in Families Conference and the Head Start Conference. Stephanie Jones reported on the NCPEN networking efforts. The networking committee is trying to identify networks in existence in NC counties. Surveys were distributed and revisions were discussed. Surveys will be posted on our website. Members were encouraged to forward this information to their own network members. Karen DeBord gave an update on credentialing. Karen is looking into an academic programs and distance education. The Family Life and Parent Education Masters Program is being reinstituted at UNCG and may be a valuable resource.
