March 5, 2002 NCPEN Meeting Minutes, 10:00 – Center for Prevention of School Violence
Karen DeBord, Chair called the meeting to order and facilitated discussion. Present: Cinda Amen, Karen DeBord, Stephanie Jones, Catherine Anderson, Henry Helms, CJ Edwards, James DuBree, Wayne Matthews, Shari Moxley. BusinessHenry Helms gave an update on issues and policies of concern to NCPEN. He discussed the DPI statewide campaign “Closing the Gap” and the emphasis on parental involvement. Also discussed was the need to identify family friendly legislators and addressing them Spring, 2003. Shari Moxley, secretary, distributed minutes from the January 9 meeting. Minutes were distributed through our email network prior to the meeting. Minutes were approved. Catherine Anderson, treasurer, reported that there is $857.57 in the NCPEN checking account. Current memberships total 40, including 27 organizational and 13 individual members. Shari Moxley, nominating committee chair, presented a slate of officers. Ballots were distributed and the slate was elected by acclamation, unanimously. The following slate was elected: Chair: Cinda Wood Amen Chair Elect: Sheila Bazemore Past Chair: Karen DeBord Secretary: Shari Moxley Treasurer: Catherine Anderson Karen DeBord (reporting for Stephanie Moore) the latest newsletter was available for distribution. This was the last paid issue. It was discussed to temporarily suspend the number of newsletters published to a bi-annual publication. The next newsletter will be available in September. The number of newsletters to be distributed to organizational members is still under review. Stephanie Moore is accepting bids for future publications. It was also discussed that the position of newsletter editor be added to the slate of officers and a review committee be established. Stephanie Jones and CJ Edwards agreed to serve as reviewers. Cinda Amen discussed outreach and education. Cinda recently represented NCPEN at the Family Support Invitational Summit. The purpose of the summit was to “help reshape Family Support Services in North Carolina.” Summit participants identified top needs as: 1) statewide inventory of existing resource, 2) training/technical assistance, and 3) outcome evaluation. Cinda will continue to represent NCPEN serving on the Outcome evaluation committee. Stephanie Jones reported on the NCPEN networking efforts. The networking committee is trying to identify networks in existence in NC counties. Surveys have been collected. Stephanie reported 11 networks were identified by the survey. Based on the survey, parent education networks are involved in sharing information, collaborating, providing parent education, and professional development activities in their respective counties. The possibility of posting network information on the website was discussed. Stephanie is working on mapping networks and creating hyperlinks to networks where appropriate. Catherine Anderson will send a letter to the survey respondents, thanking them for participating in the survey and inviting them to join NCPEN.
Future Meeting Dates were set. Meetings will continue to be held in the Board Room at the Center for the Prevention of School Violence. Directions are included at the bottom of this page. DIRECTIONS: From I-40 take the Hammond Road Exit (#299) and go south on Hammond Road. Take Hammond Road to Chapanoke Road. Turn right onto Chapanoke Road and continue to the third building on the left (319). Upon entering the parking lot, go straight and look for the entrance identified as 313. Go into the double doors and to the left, which is Suite 140.
From Hwy 401: If traveling north on Hwy 401, go past K-Mark and Tryon Road to the stoplight in front of Bojangles and Dunkin Donuts (this is Chapanoke Road). Turn right and continue to the third building on the left (319). Upon entering the parking lot, go straight and look for the entrance identified as 313.
