NCPEN Meeting Minutes
9:30 am – Center for Prevention of School Violence
June 5, 2001

Present:  Cinda Wood Amen (Parenting Institute), Gina Boyd (Center for the Prevention of School Violence) Karen DeBord (NCSU), James DuBree (Child Development), C.J. Edwards (Division of Prisons), Stephanie Jones (N.C. Coop. Extension-Brunswick Co. Center), D. Wayne Matthews (NCCES), Stephanie Moore (Newsletter), and Shari Moxley (Campbell University).  Jean Fuller, President, could not attend.  Karen DeBord led the meeting.

Gina (Wells) Boyd reported that there is $352.45 in the NCPEN checking account.  She reported 12 memberships (11 organizations and 1 individual). Memberships are based on a July 1 through June 30 fiscal year.  There is a balance of $25.17 in the savings account.

Election of Officers

Before election of officers was started, the Nominating Committee reported that next years, elections will be done by mail and officers elected at the April meeting.  Also, Sheila Bazemore (Vice President) was unable to accept nomination for Chair.  The Nominating Committee presented the slate of

Recording Secretary:  Shari Moxley

Treasurer: Gina Wells Boyd

Ballots were distributed and marked.  The slate was elected by acclamation, unanimously.  Officers will take office at the next meeting, September 5. 

Future Meeting Dates – September 5, 2001, January 2, 2002 and March 6, 2002.

Parent Educator Credential Process - Karen DeBord introduced the National Extension Parent Education Model and led a discussion on the credentialing process, how it differs and how it is similar to the Family Support Credential. 

Committee Reports:

Membership and Networking (Stephanie Moore) – Old newsletters are available with the most recent newsletter coming any day.  A distribution system is needed.  A possible source could be the State Courier Service.  Next newsletter is to be decided.  It will be ready the end of summer/beginning of fall. 

Credentialing Process (Karen DeBord)–Karen presented a four level credential process.   An equivalency Exam was also discussed.  It was suggested that members submit questions to compile for a possible credentialing exam.  All agreed and Karen DeBord will collect

the questions.  Dividing by subject matter:  Wayne took 1 (Family Systems), Shari took 1 (Child Development), Cinda took 5, Karen took 3, Stephanie Moore took 6, James DuBree took 2, and Stephanie Jones took 3.  Discussion then focused on charging for the credential and offering online courses and exams. 

Outreach and Education (Cinda Wood Amen)  – NCPEN newsletters were included in all participants’ bags at the Prevent Child Abuse North Carolina Conference in Greensboro, a statewide symposium for Exchange Centers in North Carolina, training centers, and the Prisons/Father’s program.

Finance and Budget (Gina Wells Boyd) – Dues and bank account. See Treasurer’s Report.

Congratulations were expressed to Gina Wells Boyd on her recent marriage, and to C.J. Edwards who will be retiring September 1, 2001.
